Relief as primary teachers accept latest offer from Ministry of Education

 

Primary school teachers have voted to accept the latest Ministry of Education offer. This comes after 3 other rejected offers and the largest education strike in NZ’s History.

 

The Settlement includes:

Classroom release time increases from 10 to 25 hours per term

Lump sum payment of $3000 to be paid in July, plus an additional $1500 for union members only

$4000 or 6% pay increase in July, with two further increases in July and December 2024

Reliever pay cap lifts from step 6 to 7

$710 for Teaching Council fees

Significant increases in Māori Immersion Teacher Allowance and the introduction of the Pasifika Bilingual Immersion Teaching Allowance

Introduction of Cultural Leadership Allowance

Unit value lifts to $4500

Provisional to full certification costs paid for beginning teachers

Mileage allowance increases

NZ’s Largest Kiwifruit Producer Agrees To National Agreement With AWUNZ

NZ’s largest kiwifruit producer SEEKA have negotiated a National Collective agreement covering 3000 domestic and RSE workers, this is the result of a collaborative approach with the union and Seeka.

Fred A – A good outcome for the sector. It’s begging for an FPA.

 

9 June

Secondary teachers reject latest offer, industrial action to continue

Secondary teachers part of the PPTA (Post Primary Teachers Association) have rejected the ministry’s offer of three pay rises over two years plus a lump sum payment of $4500.

Though Primary school teachers have accepted an almost identical offer, Secondary school union members have voted to continue industrial action.

Big pay rise for community-based social workers after winning pay equity extension

Around 5000 Community based social workers will receive an average increase pay of 27%, after cabinet have agreed to fund the extension of the pay equity settlement to include the community based social workers. This will be effective from 1 July 2023

Secondary teachers will enter arbitration process but need government commitment

Secondary teachers have agreed to enter arbitration as long as the government commits to the outcome.

 

Arbitration is a process for the settlement of disputes in which an independent and impartial arbitrator, or panel, makes a decision or recommendations after considering the representations of the parties.

Fred A – Underpaid teachers & social workers are securing above inflation increases. In the event of a swing to a conservative government in NZ in September increases to public servants (teachers, social workers, nurses & doctors) are likely to slow substantially.

 

23 June

Countdown workers get pay increases while Foodstuffs staff battle to get above minimum wage, union says

This week Countdown staff were given a 7% pay rise – above the rate of inflation.

In November of 2022 Countdown signed an agreement to pay the living wage rate as its minimum.

Fred A – The supermarket sector in NZ has two main players. Both are making big profits and employees are pushing for wage increases. FPA for this sector will address minimum conditions. However, once in place it does set the scene for a possible National CEA covering the sector. 

 

23 June

Library and council workers rally for better wages and working conditions

Library and council workers in Nelson, Marlborough and Tasman will hold a day of action on the 26th of June. The members are seeking a 7% increase.

 

27 June

Fair Pay Agreement for cleaners approved!

MBIE have approved the initiation of a FPA for cleaners.

Fred A – employers are scrambling to establish the parameters as to who is covered.
