As we kick off the new year, January often sees a slower start in Employee Relations as businesses and unions regroup after the holiday break. While there are fewer disputes this month, the issues that have surfaced—athletes pushing for collective bargaining rights and medical laboratory workers striking for pay parity—set the stage for what could be another eventful year. With economic pressures and wage negotiations continuing to be key themes, it will be interesting to see how workplace relations unfold in the months ahead.

Athlete union’s legal bid for collective bargaining with High Performance Sport NZ overturned

High Performance Sport NZ (HPSNZ) has won an Employment Court ruling against The Athletes’ Cooperative (TAC), an elite athletes’ union, overturning a previous Employment Relations Authority decision that required HPSNZ to engage in collective bargaining.

The court ruled that while TAC is a union and HPSNZ an employer, there is no direct employment relationship, meaning TAC cannot initiate valid bargaining. TAC, representing top rowers and cyclists, has sought leave to appeal.

Fred A – Interesting development. The latest – TAC have won their appeal they can bargain collectively. No surprise – HPSNZ are going to appeal the decision.

Same Work Same Pay: Medical Laboratory Workers Strike for 48 Hours

Medical Lab workers across the country will be walking off the job for 24 hours on the 5th and 7th of February. The action is a result of rejected bargaining claims in three MECA negotiations. The claim is for pay parity to address the 28-32% wage gap between medical lab workers and their Te Whatu Ora counterparts.

Fred A – Pay parity claim! Difficult to resolve in current 0% wage climate.
