Union workers prepare to strike at South Port as pay negotiations fail

As a result of a breakdown in pay negotiations, South port’s Union workers are ready to start their three day strike starting Wednesday.

South port employees wanted a wage increase in line with the CPI (Consumer Price index).

The company has offered a 6% wage increase, plus skillset rate adjustments and backpay, this was on top of a general 7% wage increase in 2023. (The South port Base rate is currently at $ 25.30)

Both the South Port negotiations in Jan 2024 and the Radio NZ in December 2023 broke down because of a more than 1% gap between what the employer offered and what the unions wanted.

It’s likely that this expectation gap between the parties will remain a deadlock issue for a few more months into 2024. A tight economy and a slow decline in the CPI rate are likely to nudge wage settlement numbers from the current 6% & 7% range toward the 4.5% & 5.5% range by midyear.

We suspect negotiations will be volatile for most of 2024.
