More packaging workers take strike action to see move to decent pay

Members at Opal Kiwi packaging ( another major paper packaging manufacturer) are on strike to get at least CPI on pay increases, to be able to keep up with the cost of living. Many workers have reported working as many as 60 to 70 hours a week to get by.

Auckland bus drivers get another pay boost to average wage of $26.62 per hour

Auckland bus drivers will get a second pay boost of 3.9% on top of the 8% increase in July, drivers earn on average $26.62 per hour.

 

‘There’s nothing left’: Striking staff work up to 60 hours a week

Visy Worker are striking after the company offered a two-year deal with 6% increase for the higher paid workers and to lift the lowest wages to the living wage ($23.65) in the first year and 3% in the second year, an average of 7.3% equal to the current CPI inflation rate and keeping the threshold of overtime at 50 hours rather than dropping the threshold to 40 hours.

Opal Kiwi Packaging have also had another strike after the latest two-year-deal of 4 percent increase in both years was rejected. The Opal workers have a lower base pay than that of their competitor (Visy). The workers say that the key driver for the strikes action is due to inflation rates and low percentage increases.

Packaging workers prepare for second joint mass strike

Union members from Visy Board, Charta Packaging and Opal Kiwi Packaging have joined together for a mass strike outside of Opal Kiwi’s company premises. Members want a pay increase to cover rising living costs and for overtime rates to start after 40 hours rather than the current 50 hours.

Lockout To End As Kawerau Workers Win Cost Of Living Increase

After nearly six weeks the Essity Kawerau lockout will end on Monday. The revised and accepted offer matches the recommendation from the Employment Relations Authority. The deal keeps workers’ incomes ahead of forecast inflation for the next three years, with a 5% increase and a $4,000 lump sum in 2022, a 4.5% increase and a $3,000 lump sum in 2023 and a 4% increase in 2024

Striking Airbus engineers claim they’re having to use foodbanks and sell possessions to pay the bills

Airbus aircraft engineers at RNZAF Woodbourne have renewed their strike notice – members are calling for wages to keep up with CPI rates and inflation. Two C-130 Hercules were left grounded due to the strike action.

 

20 Sept

Gib shortage: Delivery workers strike for better pay

Around 40 “CV Compton” truck drivers and labourers are striking due to low pay rates. CV Compton pay their drivers $26 per hour below market rate of $30 per hour. Members are wanting an 11% pay increase saying the GIB industry are making big profits because of their work.

 

21 Sept

Universities’ union members to vote on strike action as staff seek pay rise

Collective Agreement negotiations have been ongoing with all eight of the universities in New Zealand since July. Members will decide on strike action as staff seek an 8% pay increase, members wont accept the “impact of Covid” as a reason for low pay offers.
